Ringworm affects virtually all species of farm animals, including cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, horses, and poultry, though it is particularly prevalent in cattle where Trichophyton verrucosum serves as the primary causative agent. The condition occurs globally and is especially common in temperate climates during autumn and winter months when animals are housed indoors in close confinement. Young animals, particularly calves between two and twelve months of age, demonstrate the highest susceptibility, though animals of any age can become infected. In show animals, ringworm can disqualify entries from competition and damage reputations. The intense itching associated with the condition causes animals distress and leads to secondary injuries from rubbing against structures. However, waiting for natural resolution prolongs suffering, extends the period of contagiosity, and allows environmental contamination to accumulate.
