The condition occurs when deficiencies in vitamin D, calcium, or phosphorus prevent proper deposition of mineral matrix in newly formed bone, resulting in soft, weak skeletal structures that bend and deform under normal weight-bearing stresses. Rickets specifically affects animals with open growth plates, meaning it is exclusively a disease of the young, with the adult equivalent known as osteomalacia. All livestock species are susceptible, including cattle, sheep, goats, swine, and poultry, making this condition a significant concern across diverse farm animal production systems.
The prevalence of rickets in modern commercial livestock operations has decreased substantially compared to historical levels due to improved understanding of nutritional requirements and widespread use of properly formulated feeds. However, cases still occur, particularly in extensive production systems where animals rely on natural forage and sunlight exposure, in regions with prolonged winter conditions limiting ultraviolet light availability, and in situations where feed formulation errors or ingredient quality problems compromise nutrient delivery. Small farms and backyard operations using home-mixed feeds are at particular risk if proper attention to vitamin and mineral supplementation is not maintained. Certain intensive housing systems that prevent sunlight exposure may also predispose to rickets if dietary vitamin D is insufficient.
The welfare and economic impact of rickets in farm animals can be significant when cases occur. Affected animals experience pain and discomfort from skeletal deformities and weakness, limiting normal movement and behavior. Growth rates decrease substantially as energy is diverted from productive growth to coping with metabolic dysfunction. Permanent skeletal deformities may render animals unsuitable for breeding or sale. Severely affected animals may become recumbent and unable to rise, requiring euthanasia. In breeding herds or flocks, rickets in offspring indicates nutritional problems that require immediate correction to prevent additional cases and protect the health of adult animals.
Early recognition and prompt nutritional intervention are critical for achieving successful outcomes in rickets cases. When identified before severe skeletal deformity has developed, correction of the underlying nutritional deficiency allows normal bone mineralization to resume and can result in complete recovery. However, once significant bowing, twisting, or angulation of limbs has occurred, these structural changes may be permanent even after nutritional status is restored. Prevention through adequate vitamin D, calcium, and phosphorus provision in the diet, combined with appropriate sunlight exposure or supplementation in housed animals, remains the most effective approach to this entirely preventable condition.
