Renal cysts affect multiple livestock species including cattle, sheep, goats, and swine, with prevalence varying based on both genetic factors and species-specific susceptibility. In cattle, inherited polycystic kidney disease has been documented in several breeds with autosomal dominant inheritance patterns. Sheep and goats similarly develop both sporadic and inherited forms of renal cystic disease. Swine may develop renal cysts as congenital abnormalities or acquired lesions secondary to other kidney diseases. The condition is frequently discovered incidentally at slaughter inspection, suggesting that subclinical disease is more common than clinical presentations would indicate.
The economic and welfare impact of renal cysts in livestock depends heavily on disease severity. Mild cases with few small cysts may never affect production or animal welfare and are only noted at slaughter. However, severe polycystic kidney disease causes progressive renal failure with significant welfare concerns including chronic uremia, poor body condition, and reduced quality of life. Economic losses include decreased production efficiency, condemnation of kidneys or entire carcasses at slaughter, culling of breeding animals, and the genetic implications of maintaining affected bloodlines in the breeding population.
There is no cure for renal cysts, and treatment focuses on supportive care to maintain quality of life in affected animals. Early detection through breeding soundness examinations, ultrasound screening, or recognition of early clinical signs allows informed management decisions. For inherited forms, identification of carrier animals and careful breeding program management can reduce disease prevalence in future generations. The prognosis varies from excellent for animals with minor cystic changes to poor for those with extensive polycystic disease. Veterinary involvement is essential for accurate diagnosis, prognosis assessment, and guidance on management and breeding decisions.
