Pseudorabies, also known as Aujeszky's disease, is a highly contagious viral disease caused by Suid herpesvirus 1, a member of the Alphaherpesvirinae subfamily. This devastating neurological condition primarily affects swine, which serve as the natural reservoir host for the virus. The disease was first described by Hungarian veterinarian AladΓ‘r Aujeszky in 1902 and has since been recognized as one of the most economically significant diseases affecting the global swine industry. Despite its name, pseudorabies is not related to the rabies virus but was named for the similar clinical signs of intense itching and neurological dysfunction observed in affected animals.
Swine are the only species that can survive infection and become carriers of the pseudorabies virus, making them the critical link in disease transmission and maintenance. While pigs may recover from infection, they typically become lifelong latent carriers capable of shedding the virus during periods of stress. Other species, including cattle, sheep, goats, dogs, cats, and various wildlife species, are considered dead-end hosts, meaning they cannot transmit the virus to other animals but invariably die from infection. The disease does not affect humans, though laboratory workers handling the virus should take appropriate precautions.
The economic impact of pseudorabies on the swine industry has historically been enormous, causing losses through direct mortality, reduced reproductive performance, decreased weight gain, and trade restrictions. In breeding herds, the virus causes reproductive failure including abortions, stillbirths, mummified fetuses, and weak piglets. Young piglets infected before three weeks of age experience nearly 100 percent mortality, while older pigs may develop respiratory disease and reduced growth rates. Many countries have implemented expensive eradication programs to eliminate the disease, with the United States successfully eradicating pseudorabies from commercial swine herds in 2004 after decades of effort.
Early detection and rapid response are critical when pseudorabies is suspected because of the highly contagious nature of the virus and its status as a reportable disease in most countries. Veterinary authorities must be notified immediately upon suspicion of infection, and strict quarantine measures must be implemented to prevent spread. While there is no treatment for infected animals, vaccination programs and biosecurity measures have proven effective at controlling and eventually eradicating the disease from domestic swine populations. Understanding this disease remains important because wild and feral swine populations continue to harbor the virus and pose an ongoing threat to domestic swine production.
