Porcine Dermatitis Nephropathy Syndrome, commonly known as PDNS, is a sporadic disease of pigs characterized by the combination of distinctive skin lesions and severe kidney disease. The condition is classified as an immune-mediated disease, with the kidney damage resulting from deposition of immune complexes in the glomeruli and blood vessels, leading to a type III hypersensitivity reaction. This immune dysregulation is strongly associated with infection by Porcine Circovirus type 2, which has become endemic in swine populations worldwide. The characteristic clinical presentation combines raised, purple-red skin lesions with progressive kidney failure, creating a distinctive syndrome that experienced producers and veterinarians can often recognize visually.
PDNS affects swine operations globally, with cases reported from all major pig-producing regions. The condition occurs sporadically rather than as epidemics, typically affecting individual animals or small clusters within herds where PCV2 is endemic. While morbidity at the herd level is generally low, usually affecting less than one percent of the population, case fatality rates in clinically affected pigs are high, often exceeding fifty percent. The condition primarily affects growing and finishing pigs between eight and sixteen weeks of age, though cases in older pigs and even adult breeding animals have been documented.
The economic and welfare impact of PDNS extends beyond direct mortality. Clinically affected pigs suffer significant illness with skin lesions that may be painful and kidneys that progressively fail, causing uremia and systemic malaise. The unpredictable, sporadic nature of the condition creates uncertainty for producers who cannot predict which animals will be affected. PDNS is recognized as part of the broader Porcine Circovirus Associated Disease complex, and its presence may indicate suboptimal PCV2 control within a herd even when the syndrome itself causes limited direct losses. The visible skin lesions can cause market concerns and condemnation at slaughter.
Treatability of PDNS is limited because there is no specific therapy for the underlying immune-mediated damage. Supportive care including anti-inflammatory medications, fluid support, and nursing care may help some mildly affected animals recover, but severely affected pigs typically do not respond to treatment and often die or require euthanasia. Prevention through PCV2 vaccination and reduction of cofactors that trigger immune dysregulation offers more promise than treating established cases. Understanding PDNS as part of the broader PCV2-associated disease complex helps frame prevention efforts within comprehensive herd health management.
