The pericardium normally contains a small amount of lubricating fluid that facilitates cardiac movement during contraction and relaxation. When inflammation develops, the pericardial layers become thickened, fluid production increases, and fibrin deposition may occur, all of which impair normal cardiac function. Pericarditis in livestock represents a significant clinical challenge due to the deep-seated nature of the condition and the difficulty of achieving complete resolution in many cases.
Pericarditis affects all major livestock species, though the underlying causes, clinical presentations, and economic significance vary considerably. In cattle, traumatic reticulopericarditis resulting from metallic foreign body penetration is by far the most important form, representing a major cause of morbidity and mortality in dairy and beef cattle worldwide. This condition occurs when swallowed metal objects penetrate the reticulum and migrate forward through the diaphragm into the pericardial sac. In other species, infectious pericarditis from bacterial, viral, or other microbial agents predominates. The prevalence of pericarditis varies by region, management system, and species, with intensive cattle operations generally experiencing the highest incidence.
The economic and welfare impact of pericarditis in livestock operations can be substantial. Traumatic reticulopericarditis in cattle causes direct losses through mortality, treatment costs, reduced production during illness, and premature culling of affected animals. Animals with pericarditis typically become unsuitable for human consumption, eliminating salvage value. Chronic cases result in prolonged suffering as animals experience progressive cardiac compromise. Treatment success rates are generally disappointing, with many animals ultimately succumbing despite therapeutic efforts. The combination of high morbidity, poor treatment outcomes, and welfare concerns makes pericarditis prevention a priority in livestock health management.
Early detection and prompt veterinary evaluation offer the best opportunities for successful management of pericarditis, though prognosis remains guarded for many underlying causes. The insidious onset of traumatic reticulopericarditis often delays diagnosis until significant cardiac damage has occurred. Infectious pericarditis may respond to appropriate antimicrobial therapy if detected early, but advanced cases with extensive fibrin deposition or abscessation carry poor prognoses.
