Osteomyelitis is a serious inflammatory condition of the bone that occurs when bacterial, and occasionally fungal, organisms invade bone tissue and establish an active infection. This condition affects farm animals of all species, including cattle, sheep, goats, swine, and poultry, causing significant pain, lameness, and production losses. The infection can originate from direct contamination through wounds, spread from adjacent soft tissue infections, or arrive at the bone through the bloodstream in a process called hematogenous spread. In livestock, osteomyelitis represents a significant welfare concern and economic burden due to the prolonged treatment required and the guarded prognosis for severely affected animals.
The prevalence of osteomyelitis varies considerably among livestock species and production systems. In cattle, the condition is frequently associated with digital infections that ascend to involve the pedal bone or with vertebral infections in feedlot animals. Sheep and goats commonly develop osteomyelitis secondary to foot rot, joint ill in lambs and kids, or following tail docking and castration procedures. Swine are particularly susceptible to vertebral osteomyelitis and infections of the long bones, often related to tail biting injuries or injection site reactions. Poultry, especially broilers and turkeys, can develop osteomyelitis associated with bacterial chondronecrosis and rapid growth rates.
The economic impact of osteomyelitis on livestock operations can be substantial, encompassing direct costs such as veterinary care, medications, and labor for treatment, as well as indirect costs including reduced growth rates, decreased milk production, reproductive losses, and premature culling. Animals with chronic osteomyelitis may become permanently lame, rendering them unsuitable for production purposes and necessitating humane euthanasia. The welfare implications are equally significant, as affected animals experience considerable pain and discomfort that can persist for extended periods despite treatment efforts.
Early detection and prompt veterinary intervention are critical factors in determining the outcome of osteomyelitis cases in farm animals. When identified in the acute stages, before significant bone destruction has occurred, aggressive antibiotic therapy combined with appropriate supportive care can result in resolution of the infection. However, once chronic changes develop, including sequestrum formation, involucrum development, and extensive bone lysis, the prognosis becomes much more guarded. Producers and animal caretakers must maintain vigilant observation of their livestock and seek immediate veterinary attention when signs of bone infection are suspected to maximize the chances of successful treatment.
