The distinctive proliferative scab-like lesions typically develop around the mouth and nostrils but can also affect the udder, feet, and other body areas depending on the route of exposure and virus strain.
Orf affects sheep and goats of all ages, though clinical disease is most commonly observed in young lambs and kids experiencing their first exposure to the virus. Adult animals that have recovered from previous infections typically develop immunity that prevents clinical disease upon subsequent exposure, though the duration and completeness of this immunity varies. The virus can persist in the environment for extended periods, particularly in dried scab material, allowing infection to recur in flocks year after year as new susceptible animals are born or introduced.
