This evergreen ornamental shrub contains potent cardiac glycosides throughout all plant parts, including leaves, stems, flowers, and even dried material, making it extremely hazardous to livestock. The toxic compounds interfere with heart function, causing life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias that can result in sudden death even from relatively small ingestion amounts. Oleander's high toxicity and widespread ornamental use create significant risk for livestock whenever these plants grow within reach of grazing animals.
All livestock species are susceptible to oleander poisoning, with horses and cattle most frequently affected due to their grazing habits and size requirements for toxic doses. Sheep, goats, pigs, and poultry can also be poisoned, with all species showing similar signs related to cardiac and gastrointestinal effects. The lethal dose varies by species and individual, but is remarkably low compared to many other toxic plants. As few as 10-20 leaves may be lethal for adult horses or cattle, while smaller amounts can kill sheep, goats, or other smaller livestock.

Treatability of oleander toxicity is possible but limited by the narrow window for intervention and the severity of cardiac effects. Animals that receive treatment early, before significant cardiac damage has occurred, may survive with intensive supportive care. However, the rapid onset of clinical signs and the profound effect on heart function make successful treatment challenging. Prevention through complete elimination of oleander from livestock environments remains far more effective than attempting to treat poisoned animals.
