Locoweed poisoning affects all major livestock species that graze on western rangelands, including cattle, horses, sheep, and goats. Cattle and horses are most commonly and severely affected due to their grazing habits and the tendency of some animals to develop a preference for locoweed even when other forages are available. The condition occurs throughout the western United States, Mexico, and parts of Canada where approximately 20 species of toxic Astragalus and Oxytropis plants grow. These hardy leguminous plants often remain green when other forages have dried, making them particularly attractive to grazing animals during drought conditions or late in the grazing season.
