Lamb dysentery is a highly fatal clostridial disease caused by Clostridium perfringens type B that primarily affects newborn lambs during the first few days to weeks of life. This devastating condition is characterized by severe hemorrhagic enteritis, profound toxemia, and rapid death, often occurring before clinical signs are even noticed by shepherds. The disease has been recognized as one of the most significant causes of neonatal lamb mortality in sheep-producing regions worldwide, particularly in areas where intensive lambing practices are employed and where vaccination programs are not consistently implemented.
The condition predominantly affects lambs under three weeks of age, with the highest incidence occurring in lambs between one and ten days old. Clostridium perfringens type B produces multiple potent toxins, including beta toxin and epsilon toxin, which cause devastating damage to the intestinal mucosa and lead to systemic toxemia. The bacteria are ubiquitous in the environment and commonly found in soil, particularly in areas where sheep have been kept for extended periods. Lambs become infected through ingestion of the organism from contaminated environments, bedding, or via the udder and teats of the ewe.
The economic and welfare impact of lamb dysentery can be substantial for sheep producers who do not implement adequate preventive measures. Mortality rates in unvaccinated flocks can reach sixty to one hundred percent of affected lambs, representing significant financial losses and animal welfare concerns. The disease occurs most commonly in well-nourished lambs from ewes with good milk production, as the rich milk substrate in the intestine provides an ideal environment for bacterial proliferation and toxin production. This paradoxical relationship between good nutrition and disease susceptibility makes lamb dysentery particularly frustrating for producers striving to optimize lamb growth.
While treatment of clinically affected lambs is rarely successful due to the peracute nature of the disease and rapid progression to death, lamb dysentery is highly preventable through proper vaccination of pregnant ewes. The transfer of passive immunity through colostrum provides lambs with protection during the vulnerable neonatal period. Understanding the importance of timely vaccination and ensuring adequate colostrum intake are the cornerstones of preventing this otherwise devastating disease in sheep flocks.
