This condition is one of the most economically significant diseases affecting feedlot cattle, occurring when bacteria from the digestive tract gain access to the liver through the portal circulation and establish focal infections. The abscesses may remain small and clinically silent or can grow to substantial size, causing liver damage, reduced performance, and in severe cases systemic illness or death from abscess rupture.
The prevalence of hepatic abscesses in feedlot cattle is remarkably high, with studies consistently demonstrating that twelve to thirty-two percent of cattle on high-concentrate finishing diets develop liver abscesses detectable at slaughter. In some feedlot populations, prevalence may exceed fifty percent during periods of aggressive feeding programs or when management conditions favor rumen acidosis. The condition occurs worldwide wherever intensive cattle feeding systems exist, representing a consistent challenge to efficient beef production. While liver abscesses also occur in other livestock species, the condition reaches its greatest significance in grain-fed cattle.
The economic impact of hepatic abscesses on the beef industry is substantial and multifaceted. Direct losses from liver condemnation at slaughter represent the most quantifiable impact, with affected livers trimmed or completely condemned depending on abscess severity. Beyond liver condemnation, cattle with liver abscesses show reduced feed efficiency, decreased average daily gain, and lower carcass quality grades compared to unaffected animals. Severe abscesses may cause adhesions to adjacent organs, leading to additional carcass trimming or condemnation. Rarely, abscess rupture causes sudden death or necessitates emergency slaughter, representing complete loss of the animal.
Prevention of hepatic abscesses through dietary management and the judicious use of in-feed antimicrobials remains more practical than treatment of established infections. The strong association between rumen acidosis and liver abscess development provides the foundation for preventive strategies that focus on maintaining rumen health through appropriate diet formulation and feeding management. Understanding the pathophysiology linking high-concentrate diets, rumen epithelial damage, and bacterial translocation to the liver enables targeted interventions to reduce abscess prevalence.
