Whether resulting from traumatic injury, surgical complications, reproductive events, or underlying disease processes, significant blood loss can rapidly lead to hypovolemic shock, organ failure, and death if not promptly controlled and treated. The severity of hemorrhage depends on the volume of blood lost, the rate of blood loss, and the location of bleeding, with arterial hemorrhage and internal bleeding presenting the greatest challenges for recognition and treatment.
Hemorrhage can affect any species of farm animal under a wide variety of circumstances. Cattle commonly experience hemorrhage from dehorning, castration, obstetrical interventions, uterine prolapse, and traumatic injuries from horn injuries or handling equipment. Sheep and goats face similar risks from management procedures and obstetric complications. Pigs may hemorrhage from fighting injuries, tail biting, or surgical procedures. Poultry can experience hemorrhage from picking injuries, reproductive tract problems, or management procedures. The physiological impact of hemorrhage extends far beyond simple blood volume loss. Blood carries oxygen and nutrients to all body tissues and removes metabolic wastes. When blood volume drops significantly, the cardiovascular system attempts to compensate by increasing heart rate and redirecting blood flow to vital organs. However, these compensatory mechanisms have limits, and once approximately 30 to 40 percent of blood volume is lost, cardiovascular compensation fails and shock develops. Rapid recognition of hemorrhage and immediate intervention to control bleeding and restore circulating volume are essential for survival. External hemorrhage is usually obvious, but internal hemorrhage may be difficult to detect until cardiovascular decompensation is advanced. Producers should be prepared to apply basic hemorrhage control measures while awaiting veterinary assistance, and veterinarians must be equipped to provide definitive treatment including surgical hemostasis and blood volume replacement. Prevention strategies focusing on safe facilities, proper technique for management procedures, and identification of at-risk animals help reduce the incidence of life-threatening hemorrhage events.
