Glasser's disease is a serious systemic bacterial infection of swine caused by Haemophilus parasuis, recently reclassified as Glaesserella parasuis. This economically important disease primarily affects young pigs, particularly those in nursery and early growing phases, causing significant mortality and production losses worldwide. The condition is characterized by fibrinous polyserositis, affecting multiple serous membranes including the peritoneum, pericardium, pleura, and meninges, along with polyarthritis involving multiple joints. Glasser's disease represents one of the most significant bacterial challenges facing modern swine production, particularly in operations with high health status where pigs lack natural immunity from early exposure.
The disease affects swine globally and has become increasingly problematic in modern intensive production systems. While H. parasuis can be isolated from the upper respiratory tract of healthy pigs as part of normal flora, certain virulent strains can invade and cause severe systemic disease under appropriate conditions. The shift toward high-health and specific pathogen-free production systems has paradoxically increased susceptibility to Glasser's disease by eliminating early exposure that would otherwise confer protective immunity. Pigs are most susceptible between 4 and 8 weeks of age, particularly around weaning when maternal antibody levels decline and stress factors peak. The disease can occur sporadically or in outbreaks affecting substantial portions of susceptible pig populations.
The economic and welfare impacts of Glasser's disease extend well beyond direct mortality losses. Affected pigs that survive acute disease often show reduced growth performance and poor feed conversion throughout the growing period. Treatment costs, including antimicrobials and veterinary services, add significant expense during outbreaks. Welfare concerns arise from the painful nature of polyarthritis and meningitis, conditions that cause considerable suffering in affected animals. Carcass condemnations at slaughter due to chronic arthritis or residual lesions reduce marketable product from survivors. The unpredictable nature of outbreaks complicates production planning and creates management challenges for swine producers operating high-health systems.
Early recognition and prompt intervention are critical for successful management of Glasser's disease outbreaks. The disease can progress rapidly from initial subtle signs to severe illness or death within 24 to 48 hours, particularly in fully susceptible populations. Clinical signs including fever, depression, joint swelling, and respiratory distress should prompt immediate veterinary consultation and initiation of appropriate treatment. Fortunately, H. parasuis remains susceptible to many common antimicrobials, and early treatment typically produces favorable outcomes. Prevention through vaccination, controlled exposure programs, and biosecurity management offers the most effective long-term approach to reducing Glasser's disease impact in swine operations.
