Many affected animals ultimately require culling due to complications, continued illness, or economic infeasibility of maintaining a cow with reduced production. Prevention through good mastitis control programs and rapid treatment of acute infections before they can progress to gangrene offers the best approach to minimizing this condition's impact.

Any acute severe mastitis with rapid onset of profound systemic illness warrants heightened concern and intensive monitoring. Development of coldness, discoloration, or loss of sensation in the affected quarter signals impending or established gangrene and demands emergency intervention.
