This devastating condition primarily affects young broiler chickens between four and eight weeks of age but can occur in any poultry species or age group with compromised immune function. The disease results from infection with toxin-producing bacteria, most commonly Clostridium perfringens and Clostridium septicum, which proliferate in tissues and release potent toxins that cause extensive tissue destruction and systemic illness.
Gangrenous dermatitis affects commercial broiler operations worldwide, representing one of the most economically significant bacterial diseases in modern poultry production. The condition occurs sporadically in well-managed flocks but can cause devastating losses when predisposing factors align to create favorable conditions for disease development. Immunosuppressive diseases, particularly infectious bursal disease and chicken infectious anemia, dramatically increase susceptibility and are present in many outbreak situations. The disease appears across all geographic regions and production systems.
The economic and welfare impact of gangrenous dermatitis can be substantial during outbreaks. Mortality rates in affected flocks range from two to fifteen percent or higher, with additional losses from carcass condemnation at processing due to skin lesions. Affected birds experience severe pain, rapid deterioration, and often die within twenty-four to forty-eight hours of visible symptom onset. Beyond direct mortality, the disease causes decreased feed efficiency, reduced growth rates in surviving birds, and increased medication costs. The sudden onset and rapid progression create significant welfare concerns.
Gangrenous dermatitis is treatable when detected early and appropriate antimicrobial therapy is initiated promptly. However, the rapid disease progression means many birds succumb before treatment can take effect. Prevention through controlling predisposing factors, particularly immunosuppressive diseases, represents the most effective approach to managing this condition.
