Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) is an extremely contagious viral disease affecting cloven-hoofed animals, caused by Foot-and-Mouth Disease Virus (FMDV), a member of the genus Aphthovirus within the family Picornaviridae. This disease is characterized by fever and the development of vesicles (fluid-filled blisters) on the feet, in and around the mouth, and on the mammary glands. FMD is not a significant threat to human health, with only rare, mild human infections reported, but it is arguably the most economically devastating disease of livestock worldwide due to its extreme contagiousness, high morbidity, and catastrophic trade implications. The disease affects cattle, pigs, sheep, goats, and many wild cloven-hoofed species.
In pigs, Foot-and-Mouth Disease causes severe lameness and significant production losses, with pigs playing a uniquely important role in FMD epidemiology as massive amplifiers of the virus. Infected pigs can produce and excrete enormous quantities of virus—up to 3,000 times more airborne virus than infected cattle—making them particularly dangerous for disease spread within and between farms. All pig breeds are susceptible, with no genetic resistance identified. Clinical disease severity varies with age, with young piglets often experiencing high mortality from acute myocarditis (inflammation of the heart), while adult pigs typically survive but suffer significant production impacts. FMD is endemic in parts of Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and South America, while many developed countries have achieved and strictly maintain disease-free status.
The economic impact of Foot-and-Mouth Disease is staggering and multifaceted, extending far beyond direct production losses to encompass trade restrictions, eradication costs, and long-term market disruptions. The 2001 FMD outbreak in the United Kingdom resulted in the destruction of over 6 million animals and estimated total costs exceeding 8 billion pounds sterling. For disease-free countries, the threat of FMD introduction necessitates extensive surveillance, border control, and emergency preparedness investments. Countries experiencing outbreaks face immediate and comprehensive trade embargoes from disease-free trading partners, potentially costing billions in lost export revenue. Endemic countries suffer ongoing production losses and are excluded from premium international meat markets.
Treatment of Foot-and-Mouth Disease is not practiced or permitted in disease-free countries; instead, outbreaks are managed through emergency response protocols centered on rapid detection, quarantine, and stamping out (depopulation) of affected and at-risk animals. Vaccines exist and are used in some endemic regions, but their use is prohibited in disease-free countries due to interference with surveillance and trade implications. The extreme importance of early detection cannot be overstated—the difference between a small, contained outbreak and a national emergency often depends on how quickly the first case is recognized and reported. Any suspicion of FMD constitutes a regulatory emergency requiring immediate notification of veterinary authorities.
