Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) is an extremely contagious viral infection affecting cloven-hoofed animals, recognized as one of the most economically devastating livestock diseases in the world. Caused by a picornavirus with seven distinct serotypes and numerous subtypes, FMD produces characteristic vesicular lesions on the mouth, feet, and teats of affected animals. While mortality rates in adult animals are typically low, the disease causes severe production losses and triggers massive trade restrictions that make it among the most feared livestock diseases globally.
FMD affects all cloven-hoofed animals including cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, and numerous wildlife species, though clinical severity varies between species. Cattle typically display obvious clinical signs with vesicles in the mouth causing excessive salivation and drooling, and foot lesions causing severe lameness. Sheep and goats often experience milder clinical signs that may go undetected, potentially allowing silent spread through populations. Pigs are considered amplifier hosts, producing enormous quantities of virus in respiratory secretions while being highly susceptible to airborne infection.
The economic impact of FMD extends far beyond direct animal losses to encompass trade restrictions, control costs, and market disruptions affecting entire national economies. Countries maintaining FMD-free status face immediate suspension of livestock and livestock product exports following any outbreak detection, with restoration of trade often requiring years of demonstrated disease freedom. The 2001 United Kingdom outbreak resulted in the culling of over six million animals and economic losses estimated at eight billion pounds. Endemic FMD in developing countries causes ongoing production losses and limits access to premium export markets.
FMD is a reportable disease in virtually all countries, requiring immediate notification of veterinary authorities upon suspicion of disease. In FMD-free countries, control policies typically mandate stamping out through culling of affected and exposed animals, movement restrictions, and intensive surveillance. Treatment of affected animals is not permitted, as allowing recovery and potential carrier status would perpetuate infection. In endemic regions where eradication is not currently feasible, vaccination programs and supportive care reduce clinical impact while long-term control efforts continue. Any suspicion of FMD requires immediate veterinary consultation and regulatory notification.
