Swine represent the primary reservoir and most commonly affected domestic species for erysipelas, with disease occurring in pigs of all ages though most common in growing and finishing animals between three and twelve months of age. Turkeys are highly susceptible to erysipelas, experiencing outbreaks that can cause substantial mortality in commercial flocks. Chickens, particularly free-range and organic production birds, face increasing erysipelas challenges as alternative production systems expose birds to soil-borne organisms. Sheep develop erysipelas primarily as post-dipping lameness syndrome when skin abrasions from shearing or dipping allow bacterial entry. Various other species including ducks, geese, fish, and marine mammals can develop erysipelas under appropriate exposure conditions.
The economic impact of erysipelas encompasses direct mortality losses, reduced growth performance, carcass condemnations, and chronic sequelae affecting animal productivity. Acute outbreaks in naive swine populations can cause mortality rates of twenty-five percent or higher, while chronic arthritis and endocarditis result in long-term productivity losses and carcass quality issues. Turkey operations may experience devastating losses during erysipelas outbreaks, with mortality reaching fifty percent or more in severely affected flocks. The chronic forms of disease cause ongoing economic drain through persistent lameness, poor feed conversion, and increased susceptibility to secondary conditions.
Erysipelas is both treatable and preventable, making losses from this disease particularly unnecessary when appropriate management is implemented. The causative organism remains highly sensitive to penicillin and related antibiotics, allowing effective treatment when disease is recognized early. Excellent vaccines provide protection when properly administered, and basic biosecurity and hygiene measures reduce disease pressure in production environments. Understanding erysipelas biology, transmission routes, and control measures enables producers to minimize impact from this persistent disease challenge while addressing the zoonotic risks that require attention in operations where human contact with animals is routine.
