Corneal ulcers represent a serious ocular condition in farm animals involving loss of epithelial and potentially deeper tissue layers of the cornea. The cornea, the clear window at the front of the eye, maintains transparency through precise cellular arrangement and absence of blood vessels. When injury or infection disrupts the corneal epithelium, an ulcer develops that exposes the underlying stroma to infection, enzymatic degradation, and further damage. Without appropriate treatment, corneal ulcers can progress rapidly, potentially leading to corneal perforation, loss of eye contents, and permanent blindness.
Corneal ulcers affect all major farm animal species, occurring as primary conditions from trauma or as secondary complications of infectious keratoconjunctivitis. In cattle, ulcers most commonly develop during outbreaks of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (pinkeye), where bacterial enzymes and inflammatory processes erode the corneal surface. Sheep and goats experience corneal ulceration from similar infectious causes and from mechanical trauma. Horses are particularly susceptible to corneal ulcers, though they are addressed separately as equine conditions. Pigs and poultry also develop ulcerative keratitis under various circumstances.
The economic and welfare impact of corneal ulcers in farm animals is substantial. Affected animals experience significant pain evidenced by blepharospasm (eyelid spasms), photophobia, tearing, and behavioral changes. This discomfort reduces feed intake and productivity. Treatment costs include veterinary fees, medications, and labor for intensive nursing care in severe cases. Animals with perforated ulcers or severely scarred corneas may face permanent visual impairment or complete blindness. Carcass value may decrease for animals with visible ocular abnormalities. The welfare implications demand prompt recognition and aggressive treatment.
Treatability of corneal ulcers varies dramatically based on depth, cause, and timing of intervention. Superficial ulcers limited to the epithelium often heal within days to weeks with appropriate therapy. Stromal ulcers penetrating deeper layers require more intensive treatment and carry greater risk of permanent scarring. Deep ulcers approaching Descemet's membrane (the thin layer before the aqueous humor) represent emergencies requiring immediate intervention. Perforated ulcers, where the cornea has been breached entirely, require surgical repair if the eye is to be saved. Early recognition and treatment dramatically improve outcomes.
