Conjunctivitis refers to inflammation of the conjunctiva, the thin mucous membrane lining the inner surfaces of the eyelids and covering the visible portion of the sclera (white of the eye). This condition affects all farm animal species and represents one of the most frequently encountered ocular problems in livestock production. The inflammation may result from infectious agents, environmental irritants, allergic reactions, or traumatic injury, with infectious causes predominating in farm animal settings. When the cornea becomes involved, the condition is more accurately termed keratoconjunctivitis.
All major farm animal species experience conjunctivitis, though the specific causative agents and disease presentations vary by species. Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK), commonly called pinkeye, represents the most economically significant form in cattle, caused primarily by the bacterium Moraxella bovis. Sheep and goats experience conjunctivitis from Mycoplasma, Chlamydophila, and other organisms. Pigs develop conjunctivitis from various bacterial and viral agents. Poultry experience infectious conjunctivitis associated with respiratory disease complexes. The condition occurs worldwide wherever livestock are raised.
The economic and welfare impact of conjunctivitis in farm animals extends across multiple dimensions. Direct costs include veterinary treatment, medications, labor for identifying and treating affected animals, and reduced market value of animals with visible eye abnormalities. Indirect costs encompass decreased weight gain in growing animals experiencing pain and reduced feed intake, decreased milk production in dairy cattle, temporary blindness interfering with grazing and navigation, and predisposition to injury. Welfare impacts include ocular pain, photophobia, reduced ability to find feed and water, and social disruption when affected animals cannot maintain normal herd interactions.
Treatability varies based on the underlying cause and severity at diagnosis. Simple irritant conjunctivitis may resolve spontaneously once the irritant is removed. Infectious conjunctivitis responds to appropriate antimicrobial therapy when treatment is initiated before severe corneal damage occurs. Early intervention is crucial, as advanced cases with extensive corneal ulceration or perforation carry much poorer prognoses. Preventive measures including vaccination, vector control, and environmental management significantly reduce conjunctivitis incidence in susceptible populations.
