Sheep and goats are the primary species affected by chlamydial conjunctivitis, with the condition occurring worldwide wherever these animals are raised. Lambs and kids appear most susceptible, particularly those between two weeks and six months of age, though animals of any age can be infected. The disease occurs year-round but often shows increased incidence during periods of stress such as weaning, shipping, or seasonal management activities. Outbreaks can affect a substantial proportion of animals within a flock, sometimes reaching 80-90% morbidity in naive populations.
The economic and welfare impact of chlamydial conjunctivitis stems from reduced performance in affected animals, treatment costs, and potential long-term consequences of severe infections. Young animals experiencing ocular pain reduce feed intake during a critical growth period. Affected breeding stock may suffer reduced conception rates if stressed during breeding season. Treatability of chlamydial conjunctivitis is generally good when the condition is recognized early and appropriate therapy is instituted promptly. Systemic and topical antibiotics effectively target Chlamydophila organisms when used correctly. Most animals recover without permanent damage when treated before significant corneal involvement develops. However, the highly contagious nature of the disease means that treatment often must address multiple animals simultaneously, and reinfection can occur if environmental contamination is not addressed. Early detection through regular flock observation enables treatment before severe complications develop.
