Candidiasis, commonly known as thrush or sour crop, is a fungal infection of the digestive tract in poultry caused primarily by Candida albicans and occasionally by other Candida species. This opportunistic mycosis affects the upper digestive tract, particularly the crop, proventriculus, and mouth, creating characteristic white, raised, cottage cheese-like plaques on mucosal surfaces. Unlike many poultry diseases, candidiasis is not contagious between birds but develops when normal yeast organisms that inhabit the digestive tract overgrow due to disruption of normal gut flora, immunosuppression, or underlying digestive dysfunction.
The condition affects all poultry species, with chickens and turkeys being most commonly diagnosed. Young birds are particularly susceptible due to immature immune systems and developing gut flora populations. Ducks, geese, and other waterfowl can develop candidiasis, especially under intensive management conditions with associated stressors. Game birds including pheasants, quail, and partridges experience candidiasis when captive management creates predisposing conditions. Pigeons and other companion birds also develop the disease. The prevalence varies considerably between operations depending on management practices, with well-managed facilities experiencing sporadic individual cases while operations with predisposing factors may see higher incidence.
Economic impact of candidiasis in commercial poultry typically remains limited compared to highly contagious diseases, though significant losses can occur in certain circumstances. Young bird operations experience the most substantial impact through mortality in severe cases and growth retardation in survivors. Layer operations may see reduced production in affected birds during illness and recovery. Treatment costs, while manageable for individual cases, become significant in outbreak situations affecting multiple birds. The primary economic concern often lies in identifying and correcting the underlying predisposing factors that allowed candidiasis to develop, which may require feed changes, management modifications, or facility improvements.
Early detection and correction of predisposing factors are key to successful candidiasis management. The condition serves as an indicator of underlying problems including antibiotic overuse, nutritional deficiencies, immunosuppression, or digestive tract disorders. Treatment with appropriate antifungal medications is generally effective when combined with removal of predisposing causes. Prevention focuses on maintaining healthy gut flora through appropriate antibiotic stewardship, providing balanced nutrition, and managing environmental factors that stress birds and compromise immune function.
