Candidiasis, commonly known as thrush or crop mycosis, is a fungal infection primarily affecting the upper digestive tract of poultry caused by organisms of the genus Candida, most notably Candida albicans. This opportunistic pathogen normally exists as part of the bird's natural microflora but proliferates excessively when conditions favor its growth over competing beneficial microorganisms. The infection typically affects the crop, oral cavity, and esophagus, producing characteristic white, curd-like plaques on mucosal surfaces and causing digestive dysfunction that impairs nutrient absorption and bird performance. While individual bird infections may appear sporadic, outbreaks in flocks often indicate underlying management problems that require correction alongside treatment of affected individuals.
The condition occurs in all types of poultry including chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese, and game birds, though the incidence and severity vary based on species susceptibility and management factors. Young birds are particularly vulnerable due to their immature immune systems and the ongoing establishment of normal gut flora. Commercial poultry operations may experience outbreaks following antibiotic therapy, feed changes, or other stressors that disrupt the normal microbial balance. Backyard flocks and exhibition birds are also affected, often presenting with more advanced disease due to delayed recognition. The condition has zoonotic potential, though transmission to humans is rare and typically occurs only in immunocompromised individuals handling heavily infected birds.
The economic impact of candidiasis in poultry extends beyond obvious mortality to include reduced growth rates, impaired feed conversion, and increased susceptibility to other diseases. Affected birds often have reduced appetite and poor weight gain, extending time to market weight in meat birds and reducing production efficiency in layers. The cost of treatment, management changes, and mortality can be significant during outbreaks. Secondary bacterial infections may complicate candidiasis, adding to morbidity and treatment costs. The underlying conditions that predispose to candidiasis, such as poor hygiene or inappropriate antibiotic use, often affect overall flock health beyond just fungal infection.
Successful management of candidiasis requires understanding the predisposing factors that allow this opportunistic organism to cause disease and implementing both treatment and prevention strategies. Antifungal therapy can effectively clear established infections, but recurrence is likely unless underlying management issues are addressed. Appropriate use of antibiotics, maintenance of clean water and feed systems, stress reduction, and support of normal gut flora are essential components of prevention. Recognition that candidiasis is typically a sign of compromised host defenses or environmental conditions rather than a primary pathogen guides effective long-term control.
