Cattle are the primary species affected by this condition, with the disease occurring in beef and dairy operations across all geographic regions. The prevalence is notably higher in areas with intense ultraviolet radiation, such as high-altitude regions and locations closer to the equator. Studies indicate that cancer eye accounts for the largest single cause of carcass condemnation in cattle at slaughter facilities, with affected animals losing significant market value or being entirely rejected for human consumption due to food safety regulations.
