Bovine Respiratory Disease Complex (BRD), commonly known as shipping fever, represents the most economically significant disease affecting the North American cattle industry and one of the most important health challenges in cattle production worldwide. This multifactorial syndrome involves the interaction of various viral and bacterial pathogens with host factors and environmental stressors to produce respiratory illness ranging from mild upper respiratory infection to severe, life-threatening pneumonia. The complexity of BRD stems from the multiple agents involved and the essential role of predisposing factors in disease development.
BRD affects cattle across all production segments but causes its greatest impact in feedlot operations and among recently weaned, commingled, or transported cattle. The disease accounts for the largest proportion of morbidity and mortality in North American feedlots, with some estimates suggesting BRD affects fifteen to forty-five percent of feedlot cattle and causes over half of all feedlot deaths. The syndrome also significantly impacts cow-calf operations, dairy facilities, and stocker operations, though the presentation and primary pathogens may differ between production systems.
The economic impact of BRD extends far beyond treatment costs and death losses. Affected cattle experience reduced feed efficiency, decreased weight gain, and prolonged time to market weight. Carcass quality is often compromised, with increased condemnations and reduced grades. Treatment costs, labor for sick animal care, and the expense of prevention programs including vaccination and metaphylaxis add to the financial burden. Conservative estimates place annual BRD losses in the United States alone at over one billion dollars, making it the single most costly disease affecting beef production.
Management of BRD requires a comprehensive approach addressing prevention, early detection, and appropriate treatment. While no intervention can completely eliminate BRD given its multifactorial nature, strategic programs combining vaccination, stress reduction, appropriate nutrition, and prompt treatment of affected animals can substantially reduce both incidence and severity. Understanding the interactions between pathogens, host immunity, and environmental factors enables producers and veterinarians to develop targeted programs appropriate for their specific operations and risk situations.
