Bluetongue virus occurs worldwide between approximately latitudes 50 degrees North and 35 degrees South, corresponding to the geographic distribution of competent Culicoides vector species. The disease is endemic throughout tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Australia, and the Americas, with periodic incursions into temperate regions during favorable climatic conditions. Multiple serotypes of BTV exist, with at least twenty-seven identified globally, and immunity to one serotype does not provide protection against others. Recent decades have seen northward expansion of bluetongue into previously unaffected regions of Europe, attributed to climate change facilitating vector range expansion and possible adaptation of the virus to indigenous midge species.
The economic impact of bluetongue results from both direct disease losses and the substantial indirect costs of trade restrictions, surveillance, and control programs. While clinical disease in cattle is uncommon except with certain viral strains, subclinical infection can reduce milk production, cause transient infertility in bulls, and occasionally result in congenital abnormalities in calves from dams infected during pregnancy. The greater economic burden comes from export restrictions on live animals, semen, and embryos from bluetongue-affected regions, as many importing countries require freedom from the disease or negative testing of individual animals. Outbreaks in previously free regions trigger trade embargoes and require expensive emergency response programs.
No specific treatment exists for bluetongue, and management relies on supportive care for clinically affected animals combined with prevention strategies targeting virus transmission. Vaccination represents the primary prevention tool where available and appropriate, though the existence of multiple serotypes complicates vaccine program design. Vector control efforts have limited effectiveness against Culicoides midges given their small size, abundance, and widespread breeding habitats. Movement restrictions during high-risk seasons help prevent virus spread to susceptible populations.
