Blackleg is an acute, highly fatal clostridial disease primarily affecting young cattle, caused by the anaerobic, spore-forming bacterium Clostridium chauvoei. This devastating condition is characterized by severe muscle necrosis with gas production, typically affecting the large muscle masses of the hindquarters, shoulder, and back, leading to rapid death often within 12 to 48 hours of clinical onset. The disease has been recognized for centuries and remains one of the most economically significant clostridial diseases of cattle worldwide despite the availability of highly effective vaccines. The common name derives from the dark, discolored appearance of affected muscle tissue when examined post-mortem.
Blackleg occurs globally wherever cattle are raised and is endemic in most cattle-producing regions. The disease predominantly affects young cattle between six months and two years of age, with peak incidence in animals around one year old. A striking characteristic of blackleg is its tendency to affect the best-conditioned, fastest-growing animals in a group rather than the weakest individuals, earning it the historical name symptomatic anthrax due to its association with thriving livestock. Sheep can also be affected by Clostridium chauvoei, though the disease in sheep typically occurs following wounds or other tissue damage rather than the endogenous infection pattern seen in cattle. Other species are rarely affected under natural conditions.
The economic impact of blackleg can be substantial, particularly when it affects unvaccinated herds where multiple deaths may occur over a short period. Individual animal losses represent significant value, especially given that affected animals are typically young, growing cattle with their productive lives ahead of them. The sudden, unexpected nature of deaths without opportunity for treatment or salvage maximizes economic loss per affected animal. However, the greatest economic impact of blackleg in modern cattle production is often indirect, resulting from failure to implement or maintain vaccination programs, as proper vaccination is inexpensive and highly effective at preventing the disease.
Prevention through vaccination is the cornerstone of blackleg control and is universally recommended for all cattle in endemic areas, which includes virtually all cattle-producing regions worldwide. When vaccination protocols are properly implemented, blackleg becomes extremely rare, and occurrence of the disease is almost always attributable to vaccination failure, inadequate coverage, or animals that missed vaccination. The disease serves as a reminder of the critical importance of comprehensive clostridial vaccination programs in cattle health management, as the protection afforded by vaccination far exceeds the minimal cost and effort required for implementation.
