Blackleg is an acute, highly fatal infectious disease of cattle caused by the spore-forming anaerobic bacterium Clostridium chauvoei. This devastating condition causes rapid destruction of muscle tissue through gas gangrene, leading to severe toxemia and death, often within twelve to forty-eight hours of clinical signs appearing. The disease derives its common name from the characteristic blackish discoloration of affected muscle tissue, which results from tissue death, hemorrhage, and gas production by the multiplying bacteria. Blackleg is one of the most economically significant clostridial diseases affecting cattle worldwide and remains a major concern despite the availability of highly effective vaccines.
Blackleg primarily affects young, rapidly growing cattle between six months and two years of age, with the highest incidence in well-conditioned, thriving animals rather than poor-doing individuals. This paradoxical susceptibility pattern, where the healthiest animals seem most at risk, relates to the pathophysiology of infection involving muscle microtrauma in actively growing tissues. The disease occurs worldwide wherever cattle are raised and Clostridium chauvoei spores persist in the soil, which includes most agricultural areas. Outbreaks often follow soil disturbance, flooding, or excavation that brings buried spores to the surface, and cases tend to cluster in certain fields or pastures where spore concentrations are particularly high.
The economic impact of blackleg stems primarily from the high case fatality rate and the loss of valuable young growing stock. Unlike many cattle diseases where treatment can salvage affected animals, blackleg typically progresses too rapidly for therapeutic intervention to be effective. By the time clinical signs are recognized, toxemia is usually too advanced for treatment to succeed, resulting in mortality rates exceeding ninety percent in unvaccinated animals. Losses from blackleg are particularly painful for producers because the disease selects for the fastest-growing, best-conditioned cattle in the herd, representing the highest-value individuals. Prevention through vaccination is both highly effective and inexpensive, making blackleg losses largely preventable with proper management.
Early detection of blackleg is challenging because of the disease's rapid progression and the often subtle nature of initial signs. Affected animals may be found dead without observed illness, or may show only brief periods of fever, depression, and lameness before collapsing. When muscle swelling is detected and treatment initiated very early, occasional recoveries occur, but the vast majority of clinical cases prove fatal despite aggressive therapy. The cornerstone of blackleg control is vaccination, which provides excellent protection when properly administered, making this one of the most preventable major diseases of cattle.
