Avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, is a highly contagious viral disease caused by type A influenza viruses that naturally circulate among wild aquatic birds and can infect domestic poultry with devastating consequences. The disease represents one of the most significant health and economic threats facing the global poultry industry, with outbreaks resulting in the culling of hundreds of millions of birds, massive economic losses, and disruptions to international trade in poultry products. Avian influenza viruses are classified into two pathotypes based on their virulence in chickens: low pathogenic avian influenza strains that typically cause mild respiratory disease, and highly pathogenic avian influenza strains that cause severe systemic disease with mortality rates approaching one hundred percent in susceptible poultry species.

Wild waterfowl, particularly ducks, geese, and shorebirds, serve as the natural reservoir for avian influenza viruses and can introduce infection to domestic flocks through direct contact, contaminated water sources, or environmental contamination. This wildlife reservoir makes complete eradication of avian influenza impossible and necessitates ongoing vigilance and preparedness.
The economic impact of avian influenza extends far beyond the direct costs of bird mortality and depopulation to include trade restrictions, market disruptions, and the substantial resources required for surveillance, response, and prevention programs. Major outbreaks have resulted in billions of dollars in losses to the poultry industry, with effects rippling through the entire food supply chain from producers to consumers. Trade restrictions imposed by importing countries in response to disease detection can persist long after outbreaks are controlled, causing extended economic hardship for affected regions. The costs of maintaining adequate biosecurity and surveillance programs represent ongoing investments that producers must incorporate into their operations.
Beyond its impact on poultry, avian influenza has significant public health implications due to the potential for certain strains to infect humans and cause severe, sometimes fatal, respiratory illness. While human infections have been relatively rare and generally associated with close contact with infected poultry, the concern that avian influenza viruses could mutate or reassort to acquire the ability for sustained human-to-human transmission drives intensive global surveillance and preparedness efforts.
