Actinomycosis, commonly known as lumpy jaw, is a chronic bacterial infection that primarily affects cattle and causes progressive destruction of the bones in the head, most commonly the mandible (lower jaw) and occasionally the maxilla (upper jaw). This condition is caused by the bacterium Actinomyces bovis, a gram-positive anaerobic organism that normally inhabits the oral cavity of cattle without causing disease. The infection typically develops when the bacteria gain access to deeper tissues through wounds in the oral mucosa, often caused by rough feed, sharp plant material, or dental problems that create entry points for the pathogen.
Actinomycosis occurs worldwide wherever cattle are raised and represents one of the most commonly encountered oral infections in bovine practice. While the disease can affect cattle of any age, it is most frequently diagnosed in animals between two and five years of age, coinciding with the period of active dental eruption and replacement when the oral mucosa is most vulnerable to injury. The condition shows no breed predilection, though cattle managed on pastures with coarse, stemmy grasses or those fed rough hay and silage appear to have higher incidence rates due to increased oral trauma.
The economic impact of actinomycosis on cattle operations can be substantial, affecting both the productivity and market value of infected animals. Cattle with advanced lumpy jaw often experience significant difficulty eating and drinking, leading to weight loss, reduced milk production in dairy animals, and poor body condition that affects reproductive performance. Animals with visible jaw deformities are typically condemned at slaughter or significantly discounted at sale, representing direct financial losses to producers. Additionally, the chronic nature of the disease means that treatment costs accumulate over time, and severely affected animals may ultimately require culling.
Early detection and prompt treatment of actinomycosis are critical factors in achieving successful outcomes and minimizing economic losses. When identified in the initial stages before extensive bone involvement occurs, the condition often responds well to prolonged antibiotic therapy combined with appropriate supportive care. However, once the infection has caused significant bone destruction and the characteristic hard, immovable swelling has developed, treatment becomes much more difficult and the prognosis considerably poorer. Regular monitoring of cattle for early signs of jaw swelling, difficulty eating, or excessive salivation can help identify cases when they are still amenable to treatment.
