Actinomycosis, commonly known as lumpy jaw, is a chronic bacterial infection that primarily affects cattle and other ruminants, caused by the bacterium Actinomyces bovis. This progressive disease is characterized by the formation of hard, immovable swellings on the jaw bones, particularly the mandible and occasionally the maxilla. The condition develops when the bacteria, which normally reside in the oral cavity as part of the natural flora, gain entry to deeper tissues through wounds or abrasions in the mouth caused by coarse feed, dental eruptions, or other trauma to the oral mucosa.
Actinomycosis affects cattle worldwide and is considered one of the most common chronic infections in beef and dairy operations. While the disease can occur in animals of any age, it is most frequently diagnosed in cattle between two and five years of age, coinciding with the period of permanent tooth eruption when the oral mucosa is more susceptible to injury. The condition occurs sporadically rather than as outbreaks, as it is not contagious between animals. Sheep, goats, pigs, and horses can also develop actinomycosis, though the presentation and causative species may vary slightly among different livestock.
The economic and welfare impact of actinomycosis can be substantial for affected producers. Animals with advanced disease often experience difficulty eating due to the physical obstruction and pain caused by jaw deformities, leading to progressive weight loss, reduced milk production in dairy cattle, and poor body condition. Severely affected animals may become unmarketable due to visible deformities, and carcass condemnation at slaughter can occur when lesions are present. The chronic nature of the disease means that affected animals require ongoing management and treatment, adding to labor and veterinary costs.
Early detection and prompt treatment are critical for successful outcomes in actinomycosis cases. When identified in the initial stages before extensive bone involvement occurs, the condition responds well to appropriate antimicrobial therapy combined with surgical drainage when necessary. However, once significant bone destruction and extensive granulomatous tissue formation have occurred, treatment becomes much less effective and affected animals may need to be culled for welfare and economic reasons. Regular observation of cattle during feeding and handling, along with prompt veterinary attention for any facial swellings, can significantly improve prognosis and reduce losses associated with this disease.
