Actinobacillosis, commonly known as wooden tongue, is a bacterial infection caused by Actinobacillus lignieresii that primarily affects the soft tissues of the head and neck in cattle and occasionally other farm animals. This disease characteristically involves the tongue, causing a firm, painful swelling that progressively impairs the animal's ability to grasp, chew, and swallow food, leading to the descriptive name wooden tongue. The infection can also affect lymph nodes, skin, and other soft tissues of the head and neck region, creating abscesses and granulomatous lesions that interfere with normal function.
Actinobacillosis occurs worldwide in cattle populations and represents one of the more common bacterial infections of the oral and pharyngeal region encountered in bovine practice. While primarily a disease of cattle, actinobacillosis affects sheep, goats, pigs, horses, and occasionally other species, with clinical presentation varying somewhat by species affected. The disease occurs sporadically rather than in epidemic fashion, typically affecting individual animals within a herd rather than spreading rapidly through the population. Adult cattle appear most commonly affected, likely reflecting their accumulated exposure to rough forages that cause the mucosal injuries facilitating infection.
The economic impact of actinobacillosis relates primarily to production losses from affected animals' inability to eat normally, along with treatment costs and occasional mortality in neglected cases. Cattle with wooden tongue lose body condition rapidly as their impaired tongue prevents adequate feed intake. Dairy cattle show decreased milk production, while beef cattle fail to gain weight and may actually lose condition significantly before treatment effects improve their ability to eat. Treatment costs are generally modest when the condition is recognized early, but advanced cases requiring prolonged therapy or surgical intervention become more expensive to manage.
Treatability of actinobacillosis is excellent when the condition is recognized and treated promptly, with most animals responding well to appropriate antimicrobial and iodine therapy. Early intervention produces rapid improvement, often with visible response within days and complete resolution over several weeks. Delayed treatment allows more extensive tissue involvement and fibrosis that may result in permanent functional impairment even after successful elimination of the infection. Understanding the predisposing factors and early recognition of clinical signs enables livestock managers to initiate treatment promptly and achieve optimal outcomes.
