The trigeminal nerve is the fifth cranial nerve and controls the muscles responsible for chewing, as well as providing sensation to much of the face. When this nerve becomes inflamed, dogs lose the ability to move their jaw normally, creating a characteristic dropped jaw appearance that can be alarming for owners to witness. The exact cause of trigeminal neuritis remains unknown, earning it the designation of idiopathic. Veterinary researchers suspect that an immune-mediated inflammatory process targets the nerve, possibly triggered by viral infection or other immune stimuli. The condition primarily affects the motor branches of the trigeminal nerve that control the masseter, temporalis, and pterygoid muscles responsible for closing the jaw. Sensory function of the face usually remains intact or is only mildly affected, which helps differentiate trigeminal neuritis from other conditions affecting the trigeminal nerve such as tumors or trauma.
The impact of trigeminal neuritis on affected dogs centers on their inability to eat and drink normally. With the jaw hanging open and unable to close, dogs cannot grasp food, chew effectively, or lap water in the usual manner. This creates an immediate nutritional and hydration concern that requires prompt intervention. Dogs may drool excessively because they cannot swallow normally with an open mouth. Despite these challenges, dogs with trigeminal neuritis remain bright and alert, clearly hungry and thirsty but unable to satisfy these needs without assistance. The condition does not cause pain in most cases, which is reassuring for owners concerned about their dog's comfort.
The prognosis for trigeminal neuritis is generally excellent, with most dogs recovering full jaw function within two to four weeks. However, the interim period requires dedicated nursing care to ensure adequate nutrition and hydration.
