Telogen effluvium is a form of diffuse, non-inflammatory hair loss that occurs when a large number of hair follicles simultaneously enter the resting phase of the hair growth cycle, known as telogen, and subsequently shed their hairs together. This condition represents a reactive process rather than a primary skin disease, typically occurring as a response to significant physiological stress, illness, hormonal changes, or other systemic disturbances. Unlike many other causes of alopecia in dogs, telogen effluvium produces widespread thinning rather than localized bald patches, and the hair loss is temporary with spontaneous regrowth expected once the triggering factor has resolved.
The normal canine hair growth cycle consists of three phases: anagen, which is the active growth phase; catagen, a brief transitional phase; and telogen, the resting phase during which the hair remains in the follicle until it is eventually shed and replaced by new growth. Under normal circumstances, hair follicles across the body are at different stages of this cycle at any given time, resulting in gradual, continuous shedding that is barely noticeable. In telogen effluvium, a stressful event or physiological disruption causes a synchronized shift of numerous hair follicles into telogen, leading to dramatic shedding when these hairs are released approximately two to three months after the triggering event.
Common triggers for telogen effluvium in dogs include severe illness, high fever, major surgery, significant trauma, pregnancy and lactation, severe nutritional deficiencies, and prolonged or intense psychological stress. The condition may also occur following anesthesia, during or after hormonal fluctuations, or as a consequence of certain medications. Because the hair loss typically appears weeks to months after the triggering event, owners and veterinarians must consider events from the recent past when evaluating affected dogs. This delay between cause and effect can make identifying the specific trigger challenging in some cases.
Telogen effluvium carries an excellent prognosis because the hair follicles themselves are not damaged, and normal hair growth resumes once the underlying cause has been addressed or resolved. The condition is self-limiting in most cases, with hair regrowth beginning spontaneously as follicles cycle back into anagen. Treatment focuses on identifying and addressing any underlying conditions, providing supportive care, and ensuring optimal nutrition to support healthy hair regrowth. While the dramatic appearance of widespread hair loss can be alarming to owners, understanding that telogen effluvium is temporary and reversible provides reassurance during the recovery period.
