Supraventricular tachycardia refers to a group of abnormally fast heart rhythms that originate above the ventricles, typically in the atria or the atrioventricular junction. These arrhythmias cause the heart to beat at rates substantially higher than normal, often between 180 and 350 beats per minute or even faster. The rapid rate may be sustained for extended periods or may occur in intermittent episodes that start and stop abruptly. Supraventricular tachycardia represents an important category of rhythm disturbances in dogs that can cause significant clinical symptoms and may lead to secondary heart problems if not appropriately managed.
The mechanisms underlying supraventricular tachycardia involve abnormal electrical pathways or abnormal automaticity within the upper chambers of the heart. In normal heart rhythm, electrical impulses originate in the sinoatrial node and travel in an orderly fashion through the atria and atrioventricular node before activating the ventricles. In supraventricular tachycardia, this organized pattern is disrupted by either circular reentrant pathways that create self-perpetuating rapid rhythms or by abnormal foci that fire at inappropriately high rates. Different specific arrhythmia types within the supraventricular tachycardia category have distinct mechanisms and may respond differently to treatment.
The impact of supraventricular tachycardia on affected dogs depends on the rate, duration, and underlying heart condition. Brief episodes at moderately elevated rates may cause minimal symptoms, particularly in dogs with otherwise normal hearts. Sustained rapid rhythms prevent effective ventricular filling between beats, reducing cardiac output and potentially causing weakness, collapse, or signs of heart failure. Chronically elevated heart rates, even if not dramatically fast, can eventually lead to tachycardia-induced cardiomyopathy, where the heart muscle weakens as a direct result of the persistent rapid rate.
Treatment options for supraventricular tachycardia have expanded significantly in veterinary medicine. Medical management with anti-arrhythmic medications effectively controls many cases, restoring normal rhythm or at least slowing ventricular response rates. Catheter ablation procedures that destroy the abnormal electrical pathways responsible for the arrhythmia offer potential cure for selected patients. Emergency treatment is available for dogs presenting with life-threatening rapid rates. With appropriate diagnosis and treatment, many dogs with supraventricular tachycardia can return to normal or near-normal function and enjoy good quality of life.
