Supernumerary teeth, also known as hyperdontia, refers to the presence of additional teeth beyond the normal dental complement. Dogs normally have 42 permanent teeth consisting of 12 incisors, 4 canines, 16 premolars, and 10 molars. When extra teeth develop beyond this normal count, they are classified as supernumerary. These additional teeth can occur in any location within the mouth but are most commonly found in the incisor and premolar regions. The condition ranges from a single extra tooth, which may have minimal clinical significance, to multiple supernumerary teeth that significantly affect dental alignment and oral health.
The development of supernumerary teeth occurs during embryonic tooth formation when dental tissue that should form a single tooth instead develops into multiple teeth, or when additional tooth buds form where none should exist. The exact mechanisms remain incompletely understood but appear to involve genetic factors controlling tooth number and development. Supernumerary teeth may be fully formed and resemble normal teeth, or they may be rudimentary with abnormal shape and reduced size. Some supernumerary teeth erupt normally into the mouth, while others remain impacted within the jaw bone.
The clinical significance of supernumerary teeth depends on their location, size, and impact on adjacent structures. Extra teeth that erupt into the dental arch create crowding, pushing normal teeth out of alignment and creating areas where food and debris accumulate. This crowding accelerates plaque and tartar formation and increases the risk of periodontal disease. Impacted supernumerary teeth may cause damage to roots of adjacent teeth, form cysts within the jaw, or prevent normal eruption of permanent teeth. However, some supernumerary teeth cause minimal problems and may not require intervention.
Treatment decisions for supernumerary teeth are based on whether the extra teeth are causing problems or are likely to cause future complications. Extraction is recommended when supernumerary teeth cause crowding, displace normal teeth, create periodontal pockets, or have potential to damage adjacent structures. Some supernumerary teeth that are well-positioned and not causing problems may be monitored rather than extracted. Dental radiographs are essential for complete evaluation, as they reveal impacted supernumerary teeth not visible during oral examination. Working with a veterinarian to assess each situation individually ensures appropriate management decisions.
