The toxic effects of excessive salt occur because sodium plays a critical role in maintaining fluid balance inside and outside of cells throughout the body. When blood sodium levels rise too high, water is drawn out of cells to try to dilute the sodium concentration. In the brain, this cellular dehydration causes brain cells to shrink, potentially tearing blood vessels and causing bleeding. As the condition progresses, the brain swells in response to the damage. The kidneys, which normally regulate sodium levels by excreting excess sodium in urine, can become overwhelmed when large amounts of salt are consumed, especially if access to water is limited. The resulting condition can rapidly become life-threatening.
Dogs can be exposed to excessive salt through many sources. Obvious sources include table salt, rock salt used for de-icing roads and sidewalks, sea water, and salty foods like chips, pretzels, and processed meats. Less obvious but equally dangerous sources include homemade play dough, which contains very high amounts of salt, paintballs, which often contain salt-based fillings, certain enema preparations, and some medications. Dogs may also develop salt toxicity from drinking pool water treated with salt chlorination systems, eating ornamental salt lamps, or consuming products containing large amounts of sodium such as baking soda. The variety of potential exposure sources means that vigilance is required in many different settings.
Treatment of salt toxicity requires careful medical management because the approach to correcting sodium imbalances must be controlled and gradual. Rapidly lowering blood sodium levels can cause the brain to swell dangerously, leading to a condition called cerebral edema that can be fatal. Treatment typically involves slow, careful administration of fluids to gradually bring sodium levels back to normal while monitoring the dog's neurological status closely. Supportive care for seizures and other symptoms may also be necessary. The prognosis depends on how high sodium levels rose, how long they remained elevated, and whether brain damage occurred. Prevention through limiting access to salt sources and ensuring adequate fresh water availability is essential.
