Rickets is a metabolic bone disease affecting growing dogs that results from inadequate mineralization of developing bone tissue. This condition occurs when puppies do not receive adequate vitamin D, calcium, or phosphorus in their diet, or when imbalances in these nutrients prevent proper bone formation. The inadequately mineralized bones become soft and weak, leading to skeletal deformities, fractures, and growth abnormalities. While rickets has become relatively uncommon in dogs fed commercial pet foods, it still occurs in puppies raised on nutritionally inadequate homemade diets, unbalanced raw food diets, or under unusual circumstances that impair nutrient absorption or metabolism.
The development of rickets involves failure of the normal bone mineralization process that gives bones their rigidity and strength. During healthy growth, a protein matrix called osteoid is produced at the growth plates and on bone surfaces, and this matrix is then hardened by deposition of calcium and phosphorus minerals. Vitamin D plays essential roles in this process, including promoting intestinal absorption of calcium and regulating the mineralization process itself. When vitamin D is deficient or when calcium or phosphorus are inadequate despite normal vitamin D, the osteoid accumulates without mineralizing, creating bones that bend and deform under normal weight-bearing stresses.
The impact of rickets on affected puppies ranges from subtle skeletal abnormalities to severe, debilitating bone disease. Classic signs include bowing of the legs, enlarged joints where bones meet cartilage, and delayed closure of fontanelles in the skull. Affected puppies may show reluctance to move due to bone pain, stunted growth compared to littermates, and difficulty rising or walking. In severe cases, bones may fracture with minimal trauma, a condition known as pathological fractures. The deformities that develop during active rickets can become permanent if mineralization is not corrected before growth is complete.
Fortunately, rickets is both preventable and treatable when caught early. Prevention is straightforward through feeding nutritionally complete commercial puppy foods or carefully balanced homemade diets formulated with veterinary nutritionist guidance. When rickets is diagnosed, correction of the underlying nutritional deficiencies typically leads to rapid improvement in bone mineralization. However, skeletal deformities that developed during the period of inadequate nutrition may persist and require additional management. Veterinary evaluation is essential for accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment, as other conditions can cause similar symptoms and require different interventions.
