Rheumatoid arthritis in dogs is an immune-mediated inflammatory joint disease characterized by progressive destruction of synovial joints due to an inappropriate immune response targeting the body's own joint tissues. Unlike osteoarthritis, which results from mechanical wear and degenerative changes, rheumatoid arthritis involves active immune-mediated inflammation that directly attacks joint structures, leading to erosion of cartilage and bone. Dogs with this condition often experience significant pain, swelling, and stiffness that impair mobility and quality of life. The bilateral and symmetric pattern of joint involvement, meaning the same joints are affected on both sides of the body, distinguishes rheumatoid arthritis from many other arthritis types and creates particular challenges for affected dogs trying to compensate for painful joints. Without treatment, the progressive erosion of joint surfaces leads to permanent deformity and loss of function. Systemic effects including malaise, fever, and weight loss may accompany the joint symptoms.
Treatment of rheumatoid arthritis differs fundamentally from treatment of degenerative arthritis because addressing the underlying immune dysregulation is essential for controlling disease progression. Immunosuppressive medications form the cornerstone of treatment, aiming to reduce the inappropriate immune attack on joint tissues. Anti-inflammatory medications help control pain and swelling while immunosuppressive therapy takes effect. With appropriate treatment initiated before extensive joint damage occurs, many dogs with rheumatoid arthritis can achieve good disease control and maintain reasonable quality of life. Early diagnosis and aggressive treatment are critical because joint damage that has already occurred cannot be reversed.
