Renal dysplasia is a developmental abnormality of the kidneys in which the renal tissue fails to differentiate and mature properly during fetal or neonatal development. The term dysplasia literally means abnormal growth or development, and in the context of the kidneys, it refers to the presence of structures that are inappropriate for the stage of development the animal has reached. Affected kidneys contain disorganized tissue, including immature or fetal-type glomeruli and tubules, persistent mesenchyme, and sometimes metaplastic tissue such as cartilage or bone within the renal parenchyma.
The condition is recognized as one of the most significant hereditary kidney diseases in dogs, with a well-documented genetic basis in multiple breeds. Unlike acquired kidney diseases that develop later in life due to toxins, infections, or age-related degeneration, renal dysplasia is present from birth even though clinical signs may not become apparent until weeks, months, or even years later. The severity of the disease depends on the proportion of kidney tissue that is dysplastic and the degree to which normal compensatory mechanisms can maintain adequate renal function.
Renal dysplasia can affect one or both kidneys, though bilateral involvement is more common and carries a far worse prognosis. When both kidneys are severely affected, the dog lacks the functional reserve necessary to compensate for damaged tissue, and progressive renal failure ensues. Dogs with milder forms of the disease, where only a small proportion of tissue is dysplastic, may maintain relatively normal kidney function for years before clinical signs emerge, if they emerge at all.
The condition was first extensively described in veterinary literature in the 1970s and has since been the subject of considerable research, particularly regarding its genetic transmission in predisposed breeds. Screening programs and breeding recommendations have been developed for several breeds, though the variable expression of the disease and the challenge of identifying carriers have complicated eradication efforts.
