Pseudocyesis, commonly referred to as false pregnancy or phantom pregnancy, is a condition in which an unspayed female dog exhibits physical and behavioral signs of pregnancy despite not being pregnant. The condition occurs as a result of hormonal fluctuations that take place during the normal estrous cycle, particularly the decline of progesterone and the subsequent rise of prolactin following the diestrus phase. These hormonal changes can trick the body into mimicking the physiological responses of a true pregnancy.
The condition is remarkably common in intact female dogs and is considered a natural physiological phenomenon rather than a true pathological disorder. Some researchers estimate that as many as 50 to 75 percent of intact female dogs will experience at least one episode of pseudocyesis during their lifetime. The severity and duration of symptoms can vary considerably from one dog to another and from one cycle to the next within the same animal.
Pseudocyesis typically develops approximately six to twelve weeks after the end of estrus, which corresponds to the time frame when a pregnant dog would be preparing for whelping. The hormonal environment during this period is nearly identical whether or not conception has occurred, which explains why the body can respond with pregnancy-like changes. In most cases, the condition is self-limiting and resolves on its own within two to three weeks without medical intervention.
While pseudocyesis is generally benign, it can occasionally lead to complications such as mastitis from milk accumulation or significant behavioral disturbances that affect the dog's quality of life. Understanding the underlying mechanisms and knowing when veterinary intervention is warranted helps owners manage this condition effectively and ensure their dog remains comfortable throughout the episode.
