The impact of ovarian cysts on a dog's health varies considerably depending on cyst type, size, and hormonal activity. Functional cysts that produce hormones cause the most noticeable effects, including abnormal heat cycles, persistent estrus behaviors, and changes in the reproductive tract. Large cysts of any type can cause discomfort due to their physical presence. Perhaps most significantly, the prolonged estrogen exposure from estrogen-producing cysts increases the risk of pyometra, a serious and potentially life-threatening uterine infection. Cysts may also be associated with other ovarian tumors, though most ovarian cysts are benign.
Diagnosis and treatment of ovarian cysts typically involves imaging studies to visualize the ovaries and surgical intervention for definitive correction. While some cysts may respond to hormonal treatments, ovariohysterectomy or spaying provides permanent resolution and eliminates the risk of recurrence and associated complications. For breeding dogs where fertility preservation is desired, more conservative approaches may be attempted, though success rates vary and the underlying predisposition to cyst formation often persists.
