Hypervitaminosis D is a potentially life-threatening condition that occurs when dogs are exposed to excessive amounts of vitamin D. This fat-soluble vitamin is essential for calcium and phosphorus absorption and bone health, but excessive amounts cause dangerous elevations in blood calcium levels. The resulting hypercalcemia leads to widespread soft tissue mineralization, with particularly devastating effects on the kidneys and cardiovascular system. Hypervitaminosis D is considered a medical emergency requiring immediate veterinary intervention.
The sources of vitamin D toxicity in dogs are diverse and sometimes unexpected. The most serious cases often result from ingestion of cholecalciferol-based rodent poisons, which are designed to cause hypercalcemia in targeted pests but are equally dangerous to dogs. Over-supplementation with vitamin D products, either human supplements given inappropriately or excessive use of pet vitamins, can cause toxicity. In recent years, several pet food recalls have involved vitamin D contamination, highlighting that even commercial diets can occasionally pose risks.
When vitamin D reaches toxic levels, it dramatically increases calcium absorption from the intestines and mobilizes calcium from bones. The resulting hypercalcemia causes calcium to deposit in soft tissues throughout the body, a process called metastatic calcification. The kidneys are particularly vulnerable because they filter large volumes of calcium-rich blood, leading to mineralization of kidney tissue and acute kidney injury. The heart, blood vessels, lungs, and gastrointestinal tract are also commonly affected by pathological calcium deposition.
Early recognition and aggressive treatment are critical for survival and minimizing permanent damage. The prognosis for hypervitaminosis D depends heavily on how quickly treatment begins after exposure, the amount of vitamin D involved, and whether significant organ damage has already occurred. Dogs that receive prompt treatment before severe hypercalcemia develops have much better outcomes than those presenting after organ damage is established. Understanding the sources of vitamin D toxicity and seeking immediate veterinary care if exposure is suspected can save lives.
