Hidradenitis Suppurativa, commonly abbreviated as HS, is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that targets the apocrine sweat glands in dogs. Unlike the eccrine sweat glands found primarily on the paw pads, apocrine glands are distributed across most of the canine body and play a role in scent production rather than thermoregulation. When these glands become inflamed, blocked, or infected, the resulting condition can produce painful nodules, abscesses, and draining sinus tracts in the affected skin.
The disease is characterized by recurring episodes of inflammation that tend to worsen over time if left untreated. Initial presentations may appear similar to simple skin infections or localized abscesses, which can lead to delayed diagnosis. The chronic nature of HS means that affected dogs often experience repeated flare-ups interspersed with periods of relative remission, making ongoing veterinary management essential for maintaining quality of life.
HS in dogs shares some clinical similarities with the human form of the disease, though the underlying pathophysiology differs in several important respects. In canines, the condition most frequently involves the inguinal region, axillae, perineal area, and interdigital spaces where apocrine glands are concentrated. The warm, moist environment of these anatomical regions creates conditions favorable for bacterial colonization of compromised glandular tissue.
While HS is not considered a common condition in the general dog population, it occurs with sufficient frequency that veterinary dermatologists recognize it as a distinct clinical entity. The condition can affect dogs of any age, though it most often presents in young adult to middle-aged animals. Early recognition and intervention are critical for preventing the progressive tissue damage that characterizes advanced stages of the disease.
