Follicular dysplasia is a group of hereditary skin disorders in dogs characterized by abnormal development and function of hair follicles, resulting in hair loss and coat abnormalities. These conditions involve structural defects in the hair follicle that prevent normal hair growth, leading to patterns of alopecia that vary depending on the specific type of follicular dysplasia and the affected breed. Unlike many other causes of hair loss, follicular dysplasia is not caused by infection, parasites, allergies, or hormonal imbalances, but rather by inherited genetic defects in hair follicle structure and cycling.
The underlying mechanism of follicular dysplasia involves abnormalities in the structure of the hair follicle, hair shaft, or both. In affected dogs, hair follicles do not develop normally or fail to maintain proper function throughout the hair growth cycle. This results in hair that is fragile, easily broken, or unable to grow to normal length. The hair shafts themselves may be structurally abnormal, making them prone to breakage. In some forms, the follicles produce hair normally for a period before the defect becomes apparent, while in others, affected dogs never develop a normal coat in certain areas.
Several distinct types of follicular dysplasia are recognized, each affecting different breeds and presenting with characteristic patterns of hair loss. Color dilution alopecia affects dogs with dilute coat colors such as blue or fawn. Black hair follicular dysplasia specifically affects black-haired areas in certain breeds. Breed-specific forms of follicular dysplasia are recognized in Irish Water Spaniels, Portuguese Water Dogs, Siberian Huskies, Malamutes, and other breeds, each with distinct patterns and progression. These different types share the common feature of genetically determined hair follicle abnormalities but have varying underlying genetic mutations.
While follicular dysplasia has no cure, it is important to note that this condition is primarily cosmetic and does not typically affect the dog's overall health, comfort, or lifespan. Affected dogs can live normal, active lives despite their coat abnormalities. Management focuses on skin care to prevent secondary complications such as infections or sun damage in areas of hair loss. Accurate diagnosis is important both for appropriate management and to guide breeding decisions, as affected dogs and carriers should not be bred to reduce the prevalence of these genetic conditions.
