Canine Parvovirus, commonly known as parvo or CPV, is one of the most serious and highly contagious viral diseases affecting dogs worldwide. First identified in the late 1970s, the virus rapidly became a global threat to canine populations and remains a leading cause of infectious disease-related death in puppies. The original strain, CPV-2, has since evolved into several antigenic variants including CPV-2a, CPV-2b, and CPV-2c, all of which are capable of causing severe illness.
The virus belongs to the family Parvoviridae and is characterized by its remarkable environmental resilience. CPV is a non-enveloped, single-stranded DNA virus that can survive in the environment for months to years under favorable conditions. It is resistant to many common disinfectants, temperature extremes, and humidity changes, making environmental decontamination a significant challenge. The virus thrives particularly well in shaded, cool areas and can persist in soil, on surfaces, and on fomites for extended periods.
CPV primarily targets rapidly dividing cells in the body, which explains its predilection for the intestinal crypt epithelium, bone marrow, and lymphoid tissue. In very young puppies, particularly those infected in utero or during the neonatal period, the virus can also attack cardiac muscle cells, leading to a myocardial form of the disease. The enteric form, which causes severe gastrointestinal illness, is by far the most commonly encountered clinical presentation in veterinary practice today.
The significance of CPV in veterinary medicine cannot be overstated. Despite the availability of highly effective vaccines, parvovirus continues to claim the lives of thousands of dogs annually, particularly in areas with low vaccination rates, shelter environments, and stray dog populations. Understanding the biology, transmission, and management of this virus is essential for every dog owner and remains a cornerstone of preventive veterinary care.
