Canine distemper virus (CDV) is a highly contagious and potentially fatal viral disease caused by a paramyxovirus of the genus Morbillivirus, closely related to the measles virus in humans and rinderpest virus in cattle. CDV is one of the most significant infectious diseases affecting domestic dogs worldwide and remains a leading cause of infectious disease-related death in unvaccinated dog populations. The virus attacks multiple organ systems simultaneously, including the respiratory tract, gastrointestinal system, central nervous system, and epithelial tissues.
The distemper virus is an enveloped, single-stranded RNA virus that is relatively fragile in the external environment. It is readily inactivated by heat, drying, sunlight, and most common disinfectants, and typically survives outside the host for only a few hours under normal environmental conditions. Despite this environmental fragility, CDV maintains itself in dog populations through efficient respiratory transmission and its ability to infect a broad range of carnivore species that serve as wildlife reservoirs.
CDV has a worldwide distribution, though its prevalence varies significantly based on vaccination coverage and population management practices. In regions with robust vaccination programs, clinical distemper is relatively uncommon in pet dog populations, though outbreaks continue to occur in shelters, rescue operations, and among stray or feral dog populations with low vaccination rates. In many developing countries where vaccination coverage is limited, CDV remains endemic and is a major cause of canine morbidity and mortality.
Beyond domestic dogs, CDV affects a wide range of carnivore species including wolves, coyotes, foxes, raccoons, skunks, ferrets, mink, lions, tigers, and seals. These wildlife species serve as reservoirs for the virus and can transmit it to unvaccinated domestic dogs through direct or indirect contact. The broad host range of CDV contributes to its persistence in the environment and complicates eradication efforts, as vaccination of domestic dogs alone cannot eliminate the virus from wildlife populations.
