Canicola fever is a well-characterized form of leptospirosis in dogs caused by the spirochete Leptospira interrogans serovar canicola. Historically one of the most common serovars responsible for canine leptospirosis, canicola has been recognized as a significant pathogen in veterinary medicine for over a century. The disease derives its alternate name, Stuttgart disease, from early clinical descriptions in Germany where outbreaks of severe renal illness in dogs were linked to this organism.
Unlike some other leptospiral serovars where dogs serve primarily as incidental hosts, the domestic dog is considered a maintenance host for serovar canicola. This means that dogs can harbor the organism in their kidneys for extended periods, continuously shedding bacteria in their urine and serving as a persistent source of infection for other dogs and susceptible species. This maintenance host relationship is a defining feature of canicola fever and has important implications for disease transmission and control.
The organism is a thin, motile spirochete that thrives in warm, moist environments. It survives in alkaline or neutral pH conditions and can persist in standing water, damp soil, and mud for weeks under favorable conditions. Transmission occurs primarily through direct contact with infected urine or indirect contact with urine-contaminated environments. The bacterium enters the host through mucous membranes or skin abrasions, rapidly entering the bloodstream and disseminating to target organs.
Widespread vaccination programs over the past several decades have significantly reduced the incidence of canicola fever in many developed countries. However, the disease has not been eliminated, and cases continue to occur in unvaccinated populations, stray dog communities, and regions where veterinary care is limited. The zoonotic nature of the disease adds urgency to prevention efforts, as infected dogs pose a direct health risk to their human families and caretakers.
