Pulmonary adenocarcinoma, which arises from glandular cells of the lung, is actually the most common type of primary lung cancer in dogs. Squamous cell carcinoma of the lung, though less common, can also occur. These different tumor types share similar risk factors, clinical presentations, and diagnostic approaches, with differentiation made through histopathological examination of tumor tissue. Treatment strategies are similar across primary lung tumor types, with surgical resection offering the best outcomes for localized disease. Prognosis varies somewhat by tumor type and grade.

Metastatic lung disease is actually more common than primary lung cancer in dogs and must be differentiated during diagnostic evaluation. Cancers from many primary sites including bone, mammary glands, thyroid, and various soft tissue locations frequently spread to the lungs. Dogs with known primary tumors elsewhere should have chest radiographs to screen for pulmonary metastasis. Multiple lung nodules on imaging are more suggestive of metastatic disease than primary lung cancer, which typically presents as a single mass. Identifying whether lung tumors are primary or metastatic is crucial because treatment approaches and prognosis differ significantly.

Potential complications of bronchogenic carcinoma include local extension into surrounding structures, metastatic spread, and paraneoplastic syndromes. Tumors may invade chest wall, mediastinum, or major vessels, complicating surgical removal and worsening prognosis. Metastasis to regional lymph nodes and distant organs including liver, adrenal glands, brain, and bone may occur. Hypertrophic osteopathy, a paraneoplastic syndrome causing proliferation of bone along the legs resulting in swelling and lameness, occurs in some dogs with lung tumors. Pleural effusion, accumulation of fluid around the lungs, may develop and cause respiratory compromise. Recognizing and addressing these complications is important for maintaining quality of life throughout the disease course.
